Sometime when we make pizza at home, we don’t always want to do it in the fancy pizza oven with a fresh marinara sauce. Most of the time we want a pizza cooked in the regular oven with a sauce that reminds us of our favourite cheap pizza place (Domino’s). This homemade pizza sauce cooks for an hour until it’s thick and flavourful and freezes well to easily make ahead.

This stuff is a far step above canned and bottled pizza sauce, though the main base comes from a can. Trust me, it’s worth the few minutes it takes to whip together! If you don’t have time for it to simmer, a quick 15 minutes will do!
To Prepare:
In a small-medium pot with a lid, add all the ingredients. Whisk to combine and set over medium-low heat with the lid to bring to a simmer.

Once the mixture is at a simmer, reduce the heat to low and let it cook, partially covered, for 1 hour until the mixture thickens. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
Preferably, let it cool for at least 30 minutes without the lid so it does not begin cooking your pizza as you dress it. This can make it soggy.
To cool it quickly, add the sauce in a small heat/warp safe dish (metal bowls are best) inside a larger dish with ice water. Stir well for 5 minutes until cooled.

Spread a few tbsp of the sauce on a pizza crust up to 1-2 cm from the edge. Add cheese and other toppings as desired. Enjoy!
Enjoy this with my favourite (and fast) pizza dough, or use it on a super quick pita pizza or my sheet pan Traeger pizza.
